This is a story about a couple; Mademoiselle Victorine Lafourcade and Julien Bossuet. She is an heiress and he was an average man. There was nothing special about him. He was in love with her. unfortunately because of mademoiselle Victorine's pride of birth, she did not want to be with Julien. Instead she met and married someone else; monsieur Renelle. He was a banker and a diplomatist. He treated her badly. After years of being together she died. She is buried. At midnight Julien digs her up from her grave and notices that she had been buried alive from the start. He then resurrects her (I forgot how this happened). They run away with each other to America. Twenty years later they both go back to France. They thought that they would not be recognized by anyone, but Renelle did notice it was them and he tried to claim her. Later in the story it changes scene to talk about an officer. A man of health falling off of his horse. He hit his head and slightly fractured it. More and more he had become worse and it was thought that he was dead. He was then buried. About an hour later I guess he became conscious and was aware of the position he was in. hearing some footsteps above him he yelled out from his grave and someone heard his call. Then he was found and rushed to the hospital. Another scene in the story was about a patient named Edward Stapleton, he was one of those who had died. His corpse was dug from its grave and taken to a chamber of a private hospital. There a student wanted to test his theory of applying a battery to one of the corpse's muscles. His theory worked. Edward rose and fell heavy to the floor. I'm a bit unsure of this part, but i think the author starts to speak about his life experiences, the nightmares and troubles he's gone through.
The line that best goes along with the character is; "I was lost in reveries of death, and the idea of premature burial held continual possession of my brain." This line describes what type of state/feeling the character is in. There were several characters in the story though. From what I understood, the story had been separated into several small readings but were all connected to the fact that a person in each was buried alive and/or resurrected. So the line vaguely tells you about what had been occurring through the story..also i guess the authors personal experiences. It seemed like he had been dealing with an issue of being buried alive or something similar to that. I may have gotten confused on that part, I was not sure if he was talking about himself or a character in the story. Sounds interesting though doesn't it?
I thought the theme of the story was more about death than anything else, in my opinion. The reason why I think its death is because in the start a man was in love with a woman but she rejected him. The relationship died there. She then married another man and died a couple of years later. Then it turns into multiple stories of peoples deaths, being buried alive and then resurrected back to life. That is why the theme is death and not love. In reality death is connected to everyone in the world. We all die some time. Unfortunately the cycle of death is one of those normal things, sad. No one would want to die but it happens some day. I think a person dies everyday in the world. In return a new person is born. The death cycle repeats itself over and aver again. A chain of people are always connected to a person of death. Then eventually someone in another persons chain know other people from another chain and so on. This could be a way that death is connecting everyone in the world. It continues to expand. That's just an idea I thought... it could be true.
